Frequently used in UK construction from the early 1900s, asbestos was extensively used between the 1950s- 1980s until it was officially banned in 1999. Due to the popularity of the material, any house which was built or worked on between those years, is likely to contain asbestos.
Unfortunately, as you cannot identify asbestos by just looking at a building, an asbestos survey is required. Carried out by asbestos experts, known as asbestos surveyors, such surveys will check for asbestos containing materials. Often looking like normal insulation, plasterboard or concrete products but with deadly fibres, asbestos is like a ticking time bomb when it comes to your health.
Management Asbestos Surveys
As the name suggests, this survey covers the management of asbestos. This includes checking where it could be, the condition of it and any action that might need to be taken. This type of survey involves a visual inspection, noting the condition of the material and any risks. It involves extracting a small sample with minimal disruption.
Refurbishment and Demolition Asbestos Survey
Previously known as a type 3 survey, refurbishment and demolition asbestos surveys are required when materials are disturbed as part of construction work, or a refurbishment or demolition project. Unfortunately, you won’t know if you’ve breathed in asbestos unless you identify the material as soon as possible.
